Why small business owners should have mentors

When business owners are just starting out it’s important to take advantage of the experience of those who’ve been in business for a while, or who are familiar with their particular industry. The launch of a business is a challenging time, and being able to harness the knowledge of others will provide a leg-up during this phase, rather than going in blind.

And when the start-up phase is completed, it’s still a good idea to keep in touch with people who can offer help and advice, because they’ll help move forward.

It’s important for business owners to decide what they’d like to achieve by the end of the mentoring process, so they need to be clear about their objectives. Brainstorming a list of the attributes and qualities of the ideal mentor is a good start.

There are two main types of mentors – one that’s paid as a professional. The other is a fellow small business owner happy to share their experiences. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
